International Communication Association (ICA) Indonesia Chapter was inaugurated at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia Jakarta, Indonesia, on Tuesday (7/3/23). Prof. Noshir Contractor, president of ICA, directly appointed the board of ICA Chapter Indonesia.
“Based on the principles of inclusion, diversity, equity, access (IDFA), ICA is trying to increase global involvement, especially from southern countries,” explained Noshir when giving an offline speech. Noshir explained that starting in 2023, ICA will start ICA regional chapters. ICA Chapters are built to be flexible and responsive to local and regional demands and needs.
ICA is a highly reputable communications academic organization. ICA was founded in 1950. In 1969 it had 150 members from 28 countries. Currently ICA has 6,800 members from 87 countries. Internationalization of ICA outside the United States was first carried out in 2006 in Lima, Peru. Indonesia has hosted a regional conference in 2019 in Bali, and has been an ICA Hub since 2020. What makes Indonesia even more proud is being the first chapter in the world.
“Indonesia has shown very good involvement in the ICA program,” said Noshir. The board members of the ICA Indonesia Chapter come from various universities from various islands, from North Sumatra to Papua, chaired by Prof. Dorien Kartikawangi, from Atma Jaya Catholic University, Jakarta, Indonesia. The ICA Indonesia Chapter is significant for the development of Communication Studies in Indonesia, because it is also endeavored to be able to reach members who are unable to reach the ICA Headquarter.
Chancellor of Atma Jaya Catholic University Jakarta, Indonesia, Dr. Agustinus Prasentyantoko gave his high appreciation for the initiation of the ICA Indonesia Chapter. “Communication Science is showing progress with new professors, with the ICA Indonesia Chapter being able to further increase international recognition,” he explained in his speech.
The inauguration of the ICA Indonesia Chapter was assembled with a public lecture by Prof. Noshir Contractor with the title People Analytics: Using Digital Exhaust from the Web to Leverage Network Insights in the Algorithmically Infused Workplace. More than 400 academics enthusiastically participated in public lectures online.
Members of the ICA Indonesia Chapter will gain access to networking, learning and development, participation and recognition by the international community. Joining the ICA Indonesia Chapter will improve skills and share insights and best practices to face today’s and tomorrow’s challenges. Through the Indonesia Chapter, members can increase their credibility and professional reputation as members of international professional organizations.
ICA Indonesia Chapter will serve all regions of Indonesia, namely West, Central and East with 38 provinces and 300 universities. Several events are planned for 2023 from international conferences, series of lectures, and series of workshops. The membership fee is very affordable, namely Rp. for undergraduate students. 120,000 (USD 8), graduate students Rp. 240,000 (USD 16), while for lecturers, Rp. 360,000 (USD 22) and institutional Rp. 1,000,000 for 3 people (USD 66). Finally for professionals is Rp. 500,000 (USD 33).
ICA Indonesia Chapter invites students, lecturers, practitioners and communication policy makers to join ICA Indonesia for knowledge and communication life in Indonesia, as well as to globalize Indonesia in the field of communication.
