Highlights Indonesia’s Role in Global Communication Research
The Faculty of Communication Science at Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD) proudly hosts the 75th International Communication Association (ICA) Annual Conference – Indonesia Hub Monday (16/6) at the UNPAD Auditorium in Jatinangor, West Java. With the theme “Disrupting & Consolidating Communication Research,” the event underscores Indonesia’s growing contribution to global conversations in the field of communication.
This prestigious conference is the result of collaboration between the International Communication Association (ICA), ICA Chapter Indonesia, and five leading Indonesian universities: Atma Jaya Catholic University, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), Universitas Muhammadiyah Papua, and Universitas Padjadjaran as the main host.
The event commenced with ceremonial performances of the Indonesian national anthem “Indonesia Raya” and the Universitas Padjadjaran Hymn. Welcoming remarks were delivered by Dr. Dadang Rahmat Hidayat, Dean of the Faculty of Communication Science, followed by speeches from ICA Indonesia Chair Dr. Nia Sarinastiti, ICA Indonesia Founder Prof. Dr. Dorien Kartikawangi, and ICA Global President Dr. Silvio Waisbord. The conference was officially opened by Universitas Padjadjaran Rector, Prof. dr. Arief S. Kartasasmita, and continued with opening remarks from Executive Chair Prof. Dr. Atwar Bajari.
The conference features two main panel sessions. In the first session, Dr. Novi Kurnia presented a collaborative research project on digital literacy through the Japelidi case study, while Dr. Catur Suratnoaji discussed “Utilizing Big Data & AI: Technology Disruption’s Impact on Communication Research in Indonesia,” highlighting how technology transforms communication scholarship.
The second session included a critical reflection on the state of communication research in Indonesia by Prof. Eni Maryani, followed by an international perspective on intercultural communication and global academic collaboration by Prof. Dr. Alois Moosmüller.
A poster presentation session concluded the day, providing a platform for emerging scholars and lecturers from various institutions to showcase their latest research findings. The conference also offered rich opportunities for academic networking and collaborative exchange.
Through this event, ICA 2025 Indonesia Hub reaffirms Indonesia’s strategic position in advancing communication research and encourages meaningful global academic cooperation to address the challenges of the digital and data-driven era.
